Being a Workforce Liaison
|
Date:Wednesday, February 20th, 2013Description:Knowing how to find job and employment resources is critical for library staff who assist patrons in accessing information related to unemployment and social services. Many people are asking their public library to help them navigate this information as library resources are becoming stretched due to the increase demand. To meet these new and increased demands on frontline staff, the South Carolina State Library is collaborating with government agencies and social service organizations to provide the best service possible to patrons in the state. Do you wish to help your colleagues understand issues relating to unemployment, economic development, help guide patrons through government agency websites, learn about work trends, research employment resources and collaborate with community groups to address workforce related needs? If this sounds like you, then you may want to be your libraries point person or liaison on workforce development. At this workshop we will share strategies used to educate both the public and library frontline staff on how to access resources, research sites that showcase unemployment information, and learn about workforce trends. You will gain valuable employment resources for teens, 50+, career changers, the hard to employ, ex offenders, and special populations. There will also be discussions on the following workforce development themes: Staff training: increasing staff knowledge of resources and tips when handling difficult situations related to employment. Answering questions such as “What do you do at the desk when a patron is so desperate about their job loss, or situation they fall apart in front of you?”Cost:Registration fee: $10.00 per attendeeLocation: Lexington County Public Library System Irmo Branch Library6251 St. Andrews Road Columbia, SC, 29212 Map to location Question:Jason Broughton803-734-8576jbroughton@statelibrary.sc.gov
